Eight Mansions assigns each person a destiny trigram based on birth year and gender. From that trigram you get four favorable directions and four unfavorable ones. This post gives you a calculator-style reference table and explains how to use the results without turning your house upside down.

What Eight Mansions Actually Does

The classical name is Ba Zhai. It divides people and houses into two groups: East Group and West Group. East Group people favor north, south, east, and southeast. West Group people favor southwest, west, northwest, and northeast.

For a person, your group comes from your destiny trigram, which is calculated from your lunar birth year and gender. For a house, the group comes from the sitting direction — the back of the house.

The popular version online is the personal trigram, sometimes called the Kua number. It is simple to calculate and immediately useful.

Step 1: Find Your Destiny Trigram

Here is the quick method. Use the lunar birth year. If you were born in January or early February, check whether your birthday falls before or after the lunar new year.

1. Add the last two digits of your birth year. For example, 1987 becomes 8 + 7 = 15.

1. Keep adding until you get a single digit: 1 + 5 = 6.

1. For men born before 2000: subtract from 10. 10 – 6 = 4.

1. For women born before 2000: add 5. 6 + 5 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

1. For men born in 2000 or later: subtract from 9. 9 – 6 = 3.

1. For women born in 2000 or later: add 6. 6 + 6 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3.

The result is your Kua number, which maps to a trigram, a compass direction, and an East or West Group.

Each trigram is also a compass direction: Kan is north, Gen is northeast, Zhen is east, Xun is southeast, Li is south, Kun is southwest, Dui is west, and Qian is northwest.

Step 2: Map Your Four Good Directions

Each person has four favorable directions, ranked from best to good.

Sheng Qi (Generating Qi) — vitality, growth, best for the head of the bed or the desk chair facing this direction.

Tian Yi (Heavenly Doctor) — health and stability, good for a sick family member’s bed or a calm rest area.

Yan Nian (Longevity) — relationships and endurance, good for the master bedroom or couples.

Fu Wei (Stability) — steady support, good for study or meditation.

For East Group people (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9), the favorable directions are north, south, east, and southeast. For West Group people (Kua 2, 5, 6, 7, 8), the favorable directions are southwest, west, northwest, and northeast.

Use the chart to find which direction corresponds to each of your four favorable energies. Your Sheng Qi direction is the strongest for bed placement. Tian Yi is best for recovery and rest. Yan Nian supports relationships. Fu Wei is steady and good for study. (Kua 5 is the center of the Luo Shu square and is never used on its own — if your formula returns 5, women follow the Gen / Kua 8 row above and men follow the Kun / Kua 2 row above.)

Step 3: Use Them in the Right Room

Once you know your directions, the practical question is what to do with them. Here is the order I recommend.

Bed direction first. The most important is the direction your head points when you lie down. This is where you spend the most passive hours. If your best direction is south, arrange the bed so the headboard points south.

Desk direction second. When you sit at your desk, your face should ideally point toward one of your good directions. This is the direction you are looking, the direction your attention travels.

Stove direction third. The person who cooks most often should face a favorable direction while at the stove. If the stove is fixed, stand at it and face your good direction while cooking.

Door direction last. The direction you face when you walk out the front door matters, but it is harder to change. Do not move houses over it.

What the Four Bad Directions Mean

Eight Mansions also gives four directions to avoid or mitigate.

Jue Ming (Total Loss) — the worst. Avoid sleeping or working with your head or face here.

Wu Gui (Five Ghosts) — disturbance, conflict, unexpected problems.

Liu Sha (Six Killings) — accidents, tension, legal or relational friction.

Huo Hai (Misfortune) — smaller setbacks and irritations.

If your bed or desk is in one of these directions, the classical fix is to reposition. If you cannot move, add a remedy between you and the direction — a screen, a tall solid headboard, or a bookcase — to create backing and separation.

What If Your House Does Not Match?

This is the question clients ask most often. “I am East Group but my bedroom only faces west. Do I need to move?”

No. Eight Mansions is one layer. The form of the room matters more. A west-facing bed with a solid wall behind it and no beam overhead is usually better than an east-facing bed under a window with the door in line.

Use Eight Mansions as a tiebreaker, not a tyrant. If two bed positions are equally good for form, pick the one that faces your favorable direction. But never sacrifice solid backing for a favorable direction.

In my own practice I use Eight Mansions as a quick personal-direction layer, usually after the Form School layout is sound. I was trained in the Zhengyi Dao lineage and later in Yang Gong methods, and I find clients respond well to concrete direction advice: “Face east when you work. Sleep with your head to the south.” That clarity matters.

A Practical Example

A woman born in 1990 wants to set up her home office. Her birth year reduces to 9 (9 + 0), and for a woman born before 2000 the formula adds 5, giving 14, which reduces to Kua 5. A female Kua 5 is read as Kua 8 (Gen), so she is West Group with an earth element. Her four good directions are southwest (Sheng Qi), northwest (Tian Yi), west (Yan Nian), and northeast (Fu Wei).

She has two desk options: against the east wall facing west, or against the west wall facing east. West is her Yan Nian direction, so the first option — sitting with her back to the east wall and facing west — is the better choice, as long as the desk has a solid wall behind it and the door is visible from her chair.

Common Mistakes When Using Eight Mansions

Ignoring the lunar year. If you were born in January or early February, your lunar birth year may be the previous calendar year. This changes your Kua number.

Forgetting gender. Men and women born in the same year can have different Kua numbers, especially for Kua 5. Men get Kua 2; women get Kua 8.

Sacrificing form for direction. A bed facing your best direction but placed under a window or in line with the door is worse than a bed in a good form position facing a neutral direction. Form wins.

Mixing up facing and sitting. For the bed, the facing direction is where your face points when you lie on your back. For the desk, it is where you look. For the stove, it is where you stand while cooking. Do not use the headboard location as the facing.
